In June 2017 we had a call with our first design brief from the project team working on the Central Section of the Thames Tideway project. A project which is better known locally as London’s Super Sewer.
The Thames Tideway project is a new tunnel starting at Acton, West London, North of the Thames to the Beckton treatment plant, East London. For most of the 25km it follows the course of the River Thames at a depth of between 30m to 70m under ground level. Along the river route large shafts are being constructed feeding the flow down to the main tunnel.
This is an immense project that will collect the tens of millions of tonnes of pollution that currently pollute the River Thames every year. The cost of the tunnel is budgeted at GB £ 4.2 billion.
The 12.7km Central Section follows the river from Chelsea to Bermondsey, and comprises of sites at Chelsea, Nine Elms, Albert Embankment, Victoria Embankment and Blackfriars Bridge. This section was awarded to FLo Thames Tideway Central a Joint Venture of Ferrovial Agroman UK and Laing O’Rourke Construction, and it was these people who telephoned Temporary Works Design in June 2017 for the first time.
Since then we have had more than 100 calls from them to assist with the design of a wide variety of marine temporary works:
Our reliable support and swift turnaround added value on each design brief were greatly appreciated by the site teams, strengthening our relationship.
Many of these jobs had something in common: an engineering challenge that could be located in a confined space, close to somewhere where commuters and heavy traffic would be disrupted easily, and often close to listed bridges, close to the heart of Londoners and tourists alike.
Our engineers at Temporary Works Design not only meet these challenges, we care for how they are carried out. Not only accurately, quickly, and safely but also paying attention to how our customer at FLo will be able work with our designs.
As the Thames Tideway project continues to unfold, Temporary Works Design is excited to be involved, contributing to its future requirements and helping to ensure a safe and efficient delivery of this monumental project in the heart of London.
